Ghulam

Young boy or slave; pl. ghilman. Associated with the system of military organization in the second half of the tenth and first half of the eleventh centuries. Ghilman were generally Turkish in origin, fought in bands, and demanded high pay for their services. Used by Fatimids, Buwayhids, and lesser societies of the Muslim world.
