Founder of Indonesian Muhammadiyyah movement. Born Mohammad Darwisi . Trained by Muhammad Abduh in Cairo. Supported modern scientific education combined with traditional religious learning, particularly for women. Sought to purify Islam from syncretic mysticism, animism, Hinduism, Buddhism, feudalism, and colonialism. Neither violent nor revolutionary. Remained official at court mosque until death.
