Waqidi, Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Umar al-

(d. 823 )

Historian and judge from Arabia. Famed for popular histories of the military expeditions of the Prophet Muhammad and the early caliphs. Among the first to use hadith traditions to develop a chronology of events in early Islam. Many of his traditions were viewed with suspicion under later traditionists' strict standards of authenticity.
