Tirmidhi, Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sawra ibn Shaddad al-

(d. 892 )

Compiler of one of six Sunni canonical sources of hadith, Sahih al-Tirmidhi. Traveled in Khurasan, Iraq, and Hejaz to collect traditions. Studied with Ahmad Ibn Hanbal , al-Bukhari , and Abu Daud al-Sijistani . Numerous works were ascribed to him, but not all survived. Addresses law, theology, devotion, popular beliefs, manners, education, and hagiology. Records a smaller number of traditions than Muslim and al-Bukhari but is less repetitive and has more variety in transmitters. Includes critical discussions of chains of transmitters and points of difference between Islamic law schools. Collections include personal notes discussing the currents of thought and practice in the Islamic world of his time.
