Ideologies and actions not recognized as consistent with mainstream values. In Islam, the term often refers to the appeal to religion in order to legitimize violence, terrorism, and represssion. Distinguishing between radicalism and legitimate resistance is often difficult in contemporary circumstances. However, Islamic law regulates the use of violence, restricting it to self-defense and warfare initiated by a duly constituted government, with due warning, holding noncombatants immune, etc.
