Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyah, Shams al-Din Abu Bakr

    (d. 1350 )

Hanbali jurist from Baghdad. Disciple of Ibn Taymiyyah and compiler of his works. Critic of popular religion and the excesses of Sufism. Member of Qadiri Sufi order. Compiled a collection of hadith of Muhammad 's medical practices. Outlined the five sources of law acceptable to Hanbalis: texts of the Quran and Sunnah; fatwas of the Companions of Muhammad when they are not contradicted by the Quran or Sunnah; sayings of individual Companions when they conform to the Quran and Sunnah; traditions with a weak chain of transmission or lacking the name of the transmitter in the chain; and, when absolutely necessary, reasoning by analogy.
