Ajmer
City in the Rajasthan state of northwestern India. Founded around 1100 , it became an important center of trade and a military base during the Muslim Mughal rule in India. It hosts the mausoleum of the most important Muslim saint of India, Muin al-Din Muhammad Chishti (d. 1236 ), the founder of the Chishti Sufi order, and the palace of Akbar , the most celebrated of all the Mughal kings who ruled India from 1556 to 1605 . Chishti's tomb in Ajmer, visited by Akbar on foot, remains to this day one of the most crowded centers of pilgrimage in India.
