Ibn Kathir, Imad al-Din Ismail ibn Umar

    (d. 1373 )

Syrian historian, traditionist, and Quran exegete under the Bahri Mamluks. Influenced by Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 1328 ), his approach was conservative and strongly dependent on past authorities. His history, Al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya, begins with the Prophet's life and ends in a chronicle of Damascus. His Al-Jami compiles the Prophet's traditions from earlier works and arranges them alphabetically according to the names of those transmitting them. His Tafsir al-Quran al-Adhzim accepts the principle that the Quran is best interpreted by itself and next by the Prophet as reported by his Companions and their followers.
