Harakat al-Mahrumin
Movement of the Dispossessed. Created by Musa al-Sadr in 1974 in Lebanon in response to the needs of the Shii community, which had been denied proportional representation in government and was suffering from economic deprivation and social exclusion. Changed the interpretation of Shii history from the glorification of sacrifice, martyrdom, and passive acceptance of injustice into an activist ideology of social protest, emancipation, and struggle, resisting injustice, deprivation, tyranny, and oppression. Peacefully demanded the reform of the political system for greater Shii representation, proportional to the actual size of the population. Became a dynamic force in Lebanese politics. Forerunner to AMAL.
