Genghis Khan
(d. ca. 1227 )
Creator of the Mongol Empire. Genghis united the Mongol and Turkish tribes of the Siberian steppe in a supratribal military force (horde) that conquered northern China, northern Iran, and southern Russia. His descendants, governed by his collected edicts (yasa), created an empire stretching from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, crossed by traders such as Marco Polo . Although the Mongols killed the Abbasid caliph ( 1258 ) and caused great destruction, the Russian and Iranian portions of the empire became Muslim, restored what they had ruined, and sponsored history writing and Persian miniatures.
