    Dhahabi, Shaykh Muhammad Husayn

    (d. 1977 )

    Former Egyptian minister of religious endowments and shaykh of al-Azhar. Strong critic of Islamic extremists and militants. Kidnapped as a hostage by Takfir wa'l-Hijrah in July 1977 in order to exchange him for imprisoned members of the movement. Subsequently assassinated when the government failed to respond. His execution led to a government crackdown on militant Islamic organizations in Egypt.
