    Also spelled daftar. A bound or stitched notebook, booklet, or register. After the ninth century the term is used primarily in reference to fiscal, military, and diplomatic administrative registers and record books. All extant collections of defters are those of the Ottoman Empire, although individual ones from elsewhere have survived.
