    Bulgaria, Islam in

    Thirteen percent of Bulgaria's population is Muslim (mostly Hanafi Sunnis). Ottomans ruled the region from the fourteenth century until 1878 in the north, 1908 in the south. Bulgarian Muslims are composed of four distinct ethnic groups whose identification with and practice of Islam varies significantly: Pomaks, Turks, Tatars, and Gypsies.
