    Bashir, Omar Hassan al-

    (r. 1989 –)

Sudanese general who took control of the country's government from Sadiq al-Mahdi in 1989 . His government was initially identified with the National Islamic Front due to support from Hassan al-Turabi and the Muslim Brotherhood, but Bashir relieved Turabi of all posts in 1999 – 2000 . Fundamentalist-style Islamization projects were implemented in the 1990s to legitimize the regime. Bashir was opposed by older civilian political parties and the southern Sudanese in a major civil war.
