    Iranian dissident and major theorist of the revolutionary movement who supported and served as adviser to Ayatollah Khomeini in the 1979 Iranian revolution. Elected Islamic Republic of Iran's first president in 1980 . Impeached in June 1981 on charge of being a pro-American liberal; fled to exile in France.
