Baladhuri, Ahmad ibn Yahya al-
(d. 892 )
Early Muslim historian. Wrote a history of Arab conquests (Futuh al-buldan) arranged by areas conquered and based on documents, excerpts of which were included; this work is an important source of information on local administration and chief Muslim families. Also wrote Ansah al-ashraf, which included extensive biographical information, emphasizing the importance of family tradition and ancestry as sources of loyalty and examples for descendants. His discussions of the rise and fall of powerful dynasties provide a political moral. His commentaries on methodology are sparse, other than assertions of accuracy.
