    Badr, Battle of

    Battle fought in 624 by Muhammad and followers against the larger Meccan army led by Abu Sufyan . Seen as a symbol of the victory of Islam over polytheism and unbelief and as a demonstration of divine guidance and intervention on behalf of Muslims, even when outnumbered. Egyptians used “Operation Badr” as a code name for the 1973 Egyptian-Israeli war.
