    Azerbaijan, Islam in

    Conquered by the Russian Empire in the early 1800s, Azerbaijan remained under Russian rule until 1918 . The first Republic of Azerbaijan ( 1918 – 20 ) was a secular state that guaranteed freedom of religion; it was conquered by the Red Army and remained under Soviet rule until 1991 , when it declared its independence. Ninety-four percent of the eight million residents are Muslim; 6 percent belong to various Christian denominations. The constitution was adopted in November 1995 and established a unicameral National Assembly with 125 seats; members serve five-year terms. Heydar Aliyev (d. 2003 ) was chief of state from 18 June 1993 to October 2003 .
