The Oxford Dictionary of Islam What is This? Covers the religious, political, and social spheres of global Islam in the modern world

    Women's Action Forum

Formed in 1981 in response to the Pakistani government's implementation of the traditional Islamic penal code. Members feared that new laws would discriminate against women and compromise their civil status. The group has played a central role in the public exposure of controversy regarding various intepretations of Islamic law, its role in the modern state, and ways in which women can play a more active role in political matters. Current goals include securing women's representation in parliament; working to raise women's consciousness, particularly with respect to family planning; and countering suppression and raising public awareness of women's issues by taking stands and issuing statements on events as they occur.
