    Aws, al-

    Tribe that, with the Khazraj, invited Muhammad to Yathrib to settle a feud between the two groups. Both tribes (called ansar [helpers of the Prophet), along with emigrants from Mecca on the hijrah, established the first Islamic community. Afterward Yathrib was renamed Medina (city of the Prophet) and became the paradigm for Islamic civic and religious life.
