    Shariati, Ali

    (d. 1977 )

Iranian Shii thinker and political activist. Influenced by Marxian thought, he argued that scripture required adaptation to changing historical circumstances and that religion must be transformed from a purely private set of ethical injunctions into a revolutionary program to change the world and bring about social justice and freedom for the downtrodden and oppressed. Exhorted the masses to action according to Husayn 's example in consciously sacrificing his life on behalf of the political and social liberation of his followers. Advocated a fresh reading of Islamic scripture in order to reconstruct Islam's concepts into a modern, progressive ideology of mobilization to enfranchise and empower the masses.
