    Egyptian feminist leader. Promoted critical examination of customary practice and religious prescription, particularly veiling and seclusion. Active in the early Egyptian independence movement. Led the first organized feminist movement in Egypt and the Arab world, bringing together Muslim and Christian women. Although secular in orientation, her agenda was articulated within the framework of modernist Islam.
