    Rif

Coastal mountain region in northern Morocco extending from the Straits of Gibraltar to the mouth of the Moulouya River. Site of the Rif Rebellion ( 1921 – 26 ), an important anticolonial movement led by Islamic reformer Muhammad ibn Abd el-Krim al-Khattabi (d. 1963 ) against Spanish and French protectorate forces. In 1921 Rifian forces inflicted as many as nineteen thousand casualties on Spanish forces in the greatest single defeat suffered by a European power in the colonial history of North Africa. The Rifian Republic ( 1923 – 26 ) emphasized modern self-determination and the application of Islamic law. The idea of a Rifian republic, while inspirational, has been seen as potentially divisive in modern-day Morocco.
