    Libyan political leader. Rose to power after a coup that overthrew the monarchy in 1969 . Put forth idiosyncratic religio-political views in his Green Book. Argued that democracy must be direct and participatory. Viewed Islam as the natural religion for meeting the individual's and humanity's needs. Critical of the ulama and Sufi orders. Actively supported various self-styled liberation struggles in the 1970s and 1980s and Islamic activism in the 1990s.
