    Parti du Peuple Algérien

    Populist party formed in Algeria in 1937 by Messali al-Hajj , two months after the French government dissolved a prior party, Etoile Nord-Africaine. Sought to use tactics of spontaneous mass uprisings in the quest for national independence. Banned in 1945 by French authorities for activities against the government and was powerless to bring about political reforms and national independence, despite membership of ten thousand by 1940 .
