Palestine and Israel, Islam in
The liberation of Palestine from Israeli occupation is often projected as a duty for all Muslims because of the important Muslim shrines and mosques in Jerusalem, Islam's third holiest city. Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza since 1967 has resulted in major restrictions on and suppression of many Muslim organizations and activities and has been accompanied by the establishment of Israeli settlements in violation of international law. Some Muslims have become radicalized, although the majority of their work, funding, and activities is centered on social services. The Islamist movement is currently the opposition party in Palestinian politics. Muslims in Israel also face legal restrictions, but Islamic political organizations have had success at local levels.
