    Nigeria, Islam in

Nigeria's population is roughly split between Christians and Muslims. Nigerian Muslim religious identity is diverse: Sufi brotherhoods (Tijani and Qadiri), anti-innovation legalists, adherents of the caliphal/Medina model, women's groups, and national organizations. Civilian rule returned to Nigeria in 1999 with the election of Olusegun Obasanjo (a Christian) as president and Atiku Abubaker (a Muslim) as vice president. Early 2000 saw extensive intercommunal rioting after several northern Muslim-majority states announced the impending adoption of shariah. Nigeria's stability is viewed as critical in Africa. Obasanjo's government is widely credited with allowing far greater freedoms than previous military regimes, but corruption and abuses continue.
