Mufti
Jurist capable of giving, upon request, an authoritative although nonbinding opinion (fatwa) on a point of Islamic law. These opinions are generally based on precedent and compiled in legal reference manuals. In Twelver Shiism an analogous role came to be played by a mujtahid. In some contexts, muftis are appointed by the state and serve on advisory councils.
