Saudi opposition figure who leads the Committee for the Defense of Legitimate Rights, which was officially established in May 1993 . The first communiqué was cosigned by his father, Abdullah . Muhammad rose to prominence, as his knowledge of Western languages made him accessible to Western media. Though his father was Saudi, his mother was Egyptian, which would later be used to discredit him as an impure Saudi. Studied in Germany in the 1960s and lived in the United States in the 1980s. Through the use of international media and communications (including the Internet), his group emerged as the best-known Saudi opposition group. By 1994 Muhammad was operating out of London, but his influence has waned as his movement has factionalized.
