    Mahmal

Palanquin symbolizing the protective role played by the sovereigns of Egypt, Syria, Yemen, and the Ottoman Empire for caravans of pilgrims from those countries on their way to Mecca. From 1266 until 1952 it also carried the kiswah (a cloth to cover the Kaaba, typically embroidered with verses from the Quran and encrusted with gold and jewels), extending the sovereign's protective role to the Kaaba and Islam.
