    (d. 1867 )

    Senegalese religious leader whose 1862 declaration of holy war against “compromising” local Muslims inspired many Islamic converts and similar movements in West Africa. Although his revivalist efforts brought him into conflict with France, a local non-Muslim chief killed him to gain control of the West African kingdom of Salum. Today his tomb is a pilgrimage center.
