Kharijis/Kharijites
Seceders. Early sectarian group in Islam, neither Sunni nor Shii, although they originally supported Ali 's leadership on the basis of his widsom and piety. They turned against Ali when he agreed to submit his quarrel with Muawiyah to arbitration; a group of his followers accused him of rejecting the Quran. Ali was forced to fight them in 658 ; in revenge, Ali was murdered at the mosque in Kufa in 661 . The group survives today, known as the Ibadis, with fewer than one million adherents.
