The Oxford Dictionary of Islam What is This? Covers the religious, political, and social spheres of global Islam in the modern world

    Islamic Research Institute

Founded in Pakistan in 1960 . Merged with the International Islamic University in Islamabad in 1980 and became its research wing. Responsible for interpreting the teachings of Islam within the context of the intellectual and scientific progress of the modern world. Directed from 1962 to 1968 by Fazlur Rahman , who noted the initial difficulties of attempting to fuse Western academic methods with Islamic content, since students and scholars in Pakistan were not trained in both. Its scholars have produced works of both sincere faith and vigorous scholarship (including books and critical editions of classical texts), continuing the modernist effort to define the meaning of Islamic experience in the modern world.
