    Islamic Republican Party

    Founded in Iran in 1979 to mobilize the traditional and reactionary forces of Iranian society. Approved by Ayatollah Khomeini . Key founding members were among Khomeini's top clerical loyalists. Initial secretary general was Muhammad Bihishti . Organized rallies and demonstrations against other groups, advocated purges of government institutions and an overhaul of state bureaucracy, pushed for the execution of officials of the previous regime, and ordered confiscation of their property and takeover of some sectors of the Iranian economy. Played an important role in the seizure of the American embassy in Tehran in 1979 . Headquarters were bombed in 1981 , resulting in the deaths of many leaders. Internal factionalism led to its official dissolution in 1987 .
